Artist's Comments

Despite this it seems that the powers be
Have decided who I am
And who I will be

Who I am who I'll be
Has been decided for me
And they don’t even know me

As they pounded in the stake
I thought I heard them say
“Become like us or you will be slain”

You can't tell me who I am

It's as though you've drawn heavily from Rauchenberg's self-portrait study, as well
as included several John's cues (target).. It's a mixed media work done now - with
the appropriate signifiers in it to suggest consumption, commercialism, and I suppose
what the effects are to the human body. It's mirror effect also says something
about duality and perhaps is a reference to repetition in what we see day in, day out.

I really like the broad darkened strokes you've used; coupled with the yellow ochre and
the reds, it scores. A strong painting.

I do find however, the Nike and the Sony television the weakest areas.

wow, this is a great picture of our time. it really represents what is happening in our society and your choice of colour makes it dark and almost eery to me. but then there's the lovely mickey d's symbol and for some weird reason i perk right up and i have no idea why! i love the skeletal diagrams and the layering of all of your elements. the painting could stand totally on its own but you allow us to see deeper into the idea of your artwork through your writing and i love it. and i like how you list your musical inspiration as well. butch walker rocks!

I promise you
everything you see
is just the tip of the iceberg.

It seems that you've made a leap in the level of your painting. I'm very impressed with this, Todd, and wasn't aware that you were so very anti-mainstream. Very effective color scheme; the only thing I can think of to suggest is perhaps to touch up the swoosh a bit. Other than that, this is wonderful. I'd buy it, given the money.

Toddy I really enjoy this. I don't know anything about painting and such, so I can't say anything other than I really like it. The color scheme is especially pleasing. My only complaint is that the Nike swoosh looks somewhat out of place. Maybe if it were touched up like AJ suggested, then I would change my mind. Who knows.

:)
Your art is wonderful.

Like I've said before, I'm terrible at offering good critique on traditional pieces. Let me just say that I love it and it works quite well. Forgive my lack of traditional knowledge.
